Know Your Nets: Shared Elements in Four Unique Sports

I created multiple components to deepen understanding and interest in 4 net sports—badminton, tennis, volleyball, and table tennis.

The handbook explored the similarities and differences in equipment used, court structure, and gameplay between the sports. Bright, contrasting colors were used to represent each sport.

This book was uniquely designed with middle flaps installed on certain pages. Readers could use these flaps to flip parts of information back and forth for comparison.

It also included a perforated cheat sheet with quick reminders or facts about each sport.

The billboard and stamps were fun explorations of applying existing visuals, color palette, and type to different media. The billboard communicated an invitation to play. Stamp designs visualized movement through repetition and direction of the texts and serving ball or shuttle.

Context:

As someone who plays recreational badminton for years, I never knew the official rules for scoring, serve rotation, or the court structure. So I was challenged to explore it together with other familiar net sports. I chose badminton, tennis, volleyball, and table tennis because they all involved striking something back and forth on a court with a net in the middle.

Process:

The book first introduced the readers to basic information like equipment used, number of players, and court structure. Then it would review the rules about winning points and games, player positions, serve rotations, and much more.

The spine of the book functioned as the “net” for court diagrams.

The content on the cheat sheet is organized by sport type (by columns) and attribute (by rows).
