The deck template is designed for 72 departments and over 17,000 employees to create on-brand presentations for the city’s clients and constituents.

Multiple layout options are offered to ensure brand compliance, creative flexibility, and efficient production. The logo placement is established to highlight that all departments work together as one—as the city of Boston.
Using simple visuals and concise text is highly encouraged for effective, clear communication of complex topics. If that isn’t possible, certain layouts include another version for heavier copy.
Context:
The City of Boston seeks to serve its constituents effectively by operating as a full-service, single entity. Visual communications are key touchpoints for fostering engagement and trust with clients and constituents.
Various departments have diluted the city’s brand in their presentations with their inconsistent brand treatment (i.e. typography, logos). As an example, some highlighted only the department, but not the city.
This created challenges for the city who wanted to present itself as unified, confident, and helpful to the people they serve.
Process:
My first action step was to anticipate content needs by analyzing existing decks by different departments. I carefully considered the user needs of those creating decks and limitations of the Google Slides application. I tested different approaches to presenting specific types of content.
As a result, I developed a template with multiple layouts that incorporated titles and sections, texts, images, charts, and other commonly requested elements. It was set up for departments to produce various types of decks from simple, narrative presentations to in-depth, detailed assessments.
